Last November 4th, 2008, IDIP was named after Prof. Dr. Fernando E. Viteri. The decision was based on his background in research about prevalent public health issues developed at international institutions, and due to his supporting role for the creation and development of IDIP.
In 1999, Prof. Dr. Viteri began his collaboration with our institution through annual visits. He created the International Advisory Board and coordinated its activities with great commitment.
Prof. Dr. Viteri has published more than 300 papers in international journals. He graduated at the University of San Carlos, Guatemala City, Guatemala and continued his studies in the U.S. (University of Cincinnati and Tennessee). He was part of the staff of the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), one of the most important research centers in nutrition worldwide. He is Full Professor at the University of California in Berkeley since 1986, and consultant and member of expert groups for WHO, FAO and UNICEF. He has been honored by numerous organizations and institutions: Extraordinary Professor of the University of Navarre, Spain since 1997; 1st W.K. Kellogg Prize for Latin American Research in Human Nutrition, 1997; Year 2000 Prize by the Society for International Nutrition Research of the American Society of Nutritional Sciences; Decoration “Orden de Pedro de San José de Bethancourt”, the highest honor for Public Service given by the Government of Guatemala through its Minister of Health, 2007.
